So if you actually know of authentic Chinese food, you know this is not the Chinese restaurant to be.But as a Chinese-American who grew up eating the real deal in Chinatown/Argyle as well as regular visits to the East and West Coasts, there will always be a place in my heart for American Chinese food. It's like eating a cheeseburger from McD. It's not a cheeseburger but every now and then it hits the spot. That being said, OKAY this is probably a 3 star restaurant. You can't really screw up egg foo young, egg rolls, etc but what made my day at Hong Kong Chef was the UNBELIEVABLE customer service. Think about that. Customer Service in a Chinese takeout restaurant.1) I ordered some take out and was waiting around for my order when this irate customer calls (I overhear the conversation on speakerphone) about her delivery order of orange chicken.2) The customer is very upset, yelling at the owner because she claims they changed the chicken and now her kids won't eat it. The owner keeps apologizing and says it is the same, customer gets very offensive, and even after some very uncomfortable comments about the restaurant, the owner apologizes for the confusion and tells the customer she can bring it back for a new order and or a refund. Customer hangs up.3) The owner talks to the delivery guy and chef who made the order. Come to find out the customer's husband called the restaurant to place the order and specifically requested they cut up the chicken a little smaller than usual for his kids. Owner calls the woman back, she does not pick up so he leaves a voicemail telling her about the request from her husband to cut up the chicken and to bring it back if she wants a new order and or a refund.Granted the customer was/is a little crazy but for a Chinese takeout restaurant to go out of its way to try and make their customers happy is a random anomaly in an industry where terrible customer service is the norm I have come to expect from Chinese restaurants.Keep up the great customer service Hong Kong Chef. You guys are way ahead of the curve.

Disgusting. Inedible food. PURE GARBAGE.My delivery order:1 Sesame Chicken Dinner (includes egg roll and egg drop soup)1 order of Crab RangoonThe soup was bland and lukewarm. Had a few tastes and discarded.Crab rangoon was pure cream cheese. Literally a wonton wrapper with cream cheese only. The wonton's were stuffed with so much cream cheese the centers of the crab rangoon were still cool. Ate 1.5 and discarded the rest.Sesame chicken was not sesame chicken. The chicken bits are sitting in a bright red, sweet and sour sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. It tasted like ketchup. Disgusting. The fried bits of chicken were completely soggy and soaked in this tangy, ketchup-y, red sauce. I ate a few pieces and discarded the rest. The egg roll was greasy and not fully cooked. The inside of the egg roll was still doughy. The filling was disgusting. Again I discarded. The only thing I really ate was the fried rice and that wasn't memorable.Absolutely the worst chinese food I've ever had in Chicago. I threw more of this shit food in the garbage than I ate. What a complete waste!Spare your time, money and taste buds and find another place for chinese food.

It's always good food. The owner is nice and to the point. It's clean enough for a little tucked away chinese fast food place, I don't fear for my health. I like it!

Hong Kong Chef is my default Chinese take-out option, mostly because I live a half block down the street on Sheridan Road. There's always something to be said for convenience, especially in the midst of Chicago winter, when you don't feel like walking the streets long to get anywhere! The food here is okay, but not exceptional. I mostly order their chicken or beef fried rice, or a handful of their other entrees. For me, I almost always ask for the spicey version of any dish I get, because otherwise their food can be pretty bland.I'm not a fan of their soups or appetizers. The two times I've ordered the egg drop soup, it's had actual bits of egg shell in it, big enough to crunch when you eat it, which is not a plus for me. Also, the soup has been watery and thin on any flavor. The crab rangoons are almost pure fried cream cheese, with little else in them. Tac Quick and other nearby places do a much better job with their rangoons, if you get a craving. That said, the food is relatively inexpensive, service is quick and friendly, and I do keep coming back on a regular basis. A solid choice for basic take-out.

Ordered here after a failed attempt at cooking one of my favorite sichuan dishes (something I don't normally have a problem with, but for some reason everything is burning in my kitchen this week)... ANYWAY...Went with the Beef Lo Mein dinner. It came with shrimp fried rice, egg drop soup, and my choice of egg roll or crab rangoon -- I chose the latter. Beef Lo Mein was decent. Glad to get something with an adequate amount of meat. The Shrimp fried rice was ok, I'm not a big fan of shrimp and with the dinner special there wasn't an option otherwise. Crab rangoon was fine. Egg drop soup was ok--I've had better.Overall... It was decent Americanized, Cantonese Chinese food. It arrived in a decent amount of time. (Actually, in less time than another Chinese place that's actually closer to me.) But yeah, eh, not bad not awesome. Standard north side Chinese place.I will say, though, their delivery guy was VERY thorough. Checking the number on my door just to make sure I was the person on the order and not someone stealing their neighbor's food.

I recently moved to this area. So I just tried out places around, their lunch menu range from $4 - $6.50 the portion is huge. I could split it for lunch and dinner. This place is mostly catered for carry out or delivery. The dinning place looks like it needs a face lift. I love their General Tsao Chicken is slightly different from other places, they used different sauce base. The Lemon Chicken is not bad either, I don't really care for their Kung Pao Chicken.

Fantastic. I decided to check them out since I was hot and heavy for Chinese food and came across their menu. The ordering process was super straight forward, delivery was fast and the food overall was great. Ordered the Kung Pao chicken, chicken fried rice and Szechwan broccoli. There is a TON of chicken in both dishes. I was impressed. Next time I will ask them to go a bit easier on the sauce (a bit too much for my taste) and skip the egg rolls (they were free, but whateves going for the soda next time since the egg rolls were nothing to write home about). Having said that I would absolutely order from here again.

I don't know why there are so many negative reviews. Everything I've ever ordered here has been amazing quality for Americanized Chinese food. Also, i have no idea why someone was ragging on the sesame chicken... it most certainly does not taste like sweet and sour chicken. The recipe is unique and tasty, and we loved it!And also for people leaving reviews that were here 5 years ago? Seriously? Don't judge a place you haven't been to in half a decade. You just make yourself look silly. The people that work here are polite, and this is the best Chinese takeout I've had in most of Chicago. The portions are actually quite large. My boyfriend and I made two meals out of our order, and he eats a lot. We did order soup as well though.Love this place and will keep coming back.

Fast enough delivery, but my orange beef was ridiculously over salted. I didn't even know it was possible to over salt food this much. Especially something like orange beef that doesn't really require much salt...That said, the hot and sour soup was decent and the fried rice wasn't bad, until I got to the bottom and discovered more salt.I still haven't found a good Chinese restaurant for delivery in the area. This place is most definitively not it.

Really bad. The sesame chicken is bright pink and tastes like sweet and sour, and not in a good way. The pot stickers were weird and watery on the inside, and gummy on the outside. The egg rolls were chewy, unpleasant, and did not have any identifiable flavors. The rice was good, for which I am grateful because that's what I ended up eating for dinner.

Great takeout and delivery! As someone that used to help manage a chinese restaraunt i've learned a few things to look / taste for. First and foremost the freshness of their egg rolls. Most places will even give you a free one with a small order, take advantage! Also that there are two types of chinese restaraunt, dine-in or take out / delivery. Most places cater to one or the other. This is definetly the take out variety and they do this well.

I've had Hong Kong Chef before and raved about it. I was totally impressed with the sweet and sour chicken. This time around I got sesame chicken, completely different, it was all dark meat and very rubbery. I was expecting fresh white meat lightly fried (like the sweet and sour chicken previously gotten) but this time it was uneatable. While this is my only complaint it was the entree of the meal. But the egg roll was fantastic!

This was a shot in the dark restaurant for me. I went strictly by reviews I read on Yelp and GrubHub...and after I threw my meal away I vowed to write one so maybe some curious soul wouldn't have to endure what I did.I ordered the famous "lunch special" to be delivered to my work and the ONLY good thing about the experience was that it arrived quickly. But after I tasted the food I understood why it was able to get to me so fast.I ordered broccoli chicken which I remember thinking "would be hard to mess up". On the contrary the chicken was nearly translucent, the broccoli was bendy, and the creamy white sauce reminded me of something that, as far as I am aware, isn't allowed on any menu. The fried rice that accompanies any lunch special was literally crunchy. It had obviously been made in a large batch and sitting out for hours before being served. My side of egg drop soup was so dense that my plastic spoon stood up in it without falling over. I'm gagging thinking about it really.Bottom line...won't ever order there again, and very happy that I only spent 6 dollars.

The delivery guy called and said he was there, as though I was to walk to his car and retrieve the order (no thanks, you can come to my door). Then the food - ugh. I had a craving for egg foo young and didn't know that it was possible to screw up such a basic dish. However, mine was charred and inedible. The crab rangoon is heavy, not light and crisp like I prefer. Overall, the place doesn't even hit the spot for greasy Chinese. i won't order from there again.
